Press Release

Date: July 17, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX-15) was honored with the "Friend of the National Parks" Award from the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA). The award is given to Members of Congress who upheld standards and integrity of the National Park System or protected parks from harm.

"It is quite an honor to receive this award from the NPCA because of the history of how the protection of our national parks began; it began with an elected official, the then President of the United States," said U.S. Rep. Hinojosa. "President Teddy Roosevelt loved this magnificent country in many ways and thanks to him we have preserved much of our beautiful landscape by keeping it true to its pristine nature. President Roosevelt is quoted as saying, "There are no words that can tell the hidden spirit of the wilderness that can reveal its mystery, its melancholy, and its charm." Congressman Hinojosa added, "I say, let's keep it that way. I want to thank the members of the NPCA for all of their hard work and their passion for preserving our parks."

The award is a reproduction of an art-deco poster of the Sequoia National Park, in the style of those produced in the 1930's from the National Park Service by the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration.
